Changes to ADHD Assessment in New Zealand
From early 2024, General Practitioners (GPs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) who have completed the required training are permitted to assess, diagnose, and initiate medication for ADHD in adults. This change aims to improve access to care for people who may have previously struggled to obtain an assessment.
These changes apply only to adults, not children.
Our Current Service Availability
At Western Heights Health Centre, we are committed to providing high‑quality, accessible care. However, ADHD assessment is not considered a core General Practice service. It requires:
- Additional specialist training
- Longer consultation times
- Significant clinical expertise
There is no additional government funding for this adult service. As a result, private ADHD assessments in New Zealand typically cost $1000–$2000.
At this time, we do not have a GP or Nurse Practitioner who has completed the required ADHD assessment training, so we are unable to offer full ADHD assessments onsite.
If You Are Concerned You May Have ADHD
You are welcome to book an appointment with your usual GP or NP to discuss your concerns. During this appointment, we can:
- Explore your symptoms and medical history
- Discuss whether an ADHD assessment may be appropriate
- Explain your options
- Provide a referral to an external ADHD assessment provider if needed
Please note that there is currently no accessible publicly funded adult ADHD assessment service in New Zealand, so external assessments will involve a cost to the patient.
